Origen on Theosis

Our Lord Jesus Christ . . . became what we are, so that He might bring us to be even what He Himself is.

The first principles of man are self-existent with God. God himself, finding he was in the midst of spirits and glory, because he was more intelligent, saw proper to institute laws whereby the rest could have a privilege to advance like himself. The relationship we have with God places us in a situation to advance in knowledge.

God became man that man might become God.

Thou shalt resemble Him . . . having made thee even God to his glory.

. . . from Him there began the union of the divine with the human nature. This was so that the human – by communion with the divine – might rise to be divine. This not only happened in Jesus, but also in all those who not only believe, but enter upon the life that Jesus taught.
